This series is inspired by the “Pacific Madrone” species of trees (arbutus menziesii) found in coastal forests of the Pacific Northwest Region of North America. Artist, Carole Hayne lives in a grove of madrone trees, and enjoys observing the dynamic changes of the trees through the seasons.
Each piece is formed from a slab of clay creating an organic shaped vase or bowl, and features a unique pattern of tree trunks made by caving out the negative spaces between them. The ground is golden tan glaze, tree trunks are a “lobster” stained glaze and the leaves a saturated copper glaze. The surface of the piece is blended together with a light dusting of white glaze.
